Is This Legal??

Separation of Church and State? What separation of Church and State?

St. Augustine's Episcopal Church VOTE FOR OBAMA DRIVE:

"Benefit Yard Sale and Raffle for St Augustine's Episcopal Church and voter registration. Hours are from 6am to 1pm. Come out and support the church and Obama!

UPDATE: The church in question appears to be St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Kinston, North Carolina. It is listed in the roster of churches for the Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina.

UPDATE 03AUG2008: Because The Messiah's websites have a long history "disappearing" people, events, quotes, and anything else that may cast doubt that he is The One (Jeremiah Wright? Who is Jeremiah Wright??), here is a screenshot advertising the event at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church:

Haven't some churches lost their IRS exempt status for less?

Heck, no. Not if it's an Episcopal Church. We've been getting away with that kind of crap for years. It's those right wing,Bible-thumping fundamentalists who that law applies to!

Non-denominational churches have been flagged by the IRS for these types of things. I hope they dig into this one.

Rob,

It is a rather tenuous assertion that what is happening here is illegal. All of the information that you and SF are showing that identifies this as a "VOTE FOR OBAMA DRIVE" is from sources clearly other than the parish church. It may be a questionable act that the church has linked to a page on the Obama-affiliated website that calls it that, but the church can only decide to link or not link, as the case may be. I doubt that linking would constitute a violation absent some other documentary evidence that the parish is supporting Obama.

It is not abundantly clear that such linking is necessarily more than providing information (without going to the time/expense of making their own candidate neutral web page) about a Church Benefit and Raffle as part of a voter registration drive.

Now, if the parish had its own page, or even an Obama-specific message in a bulletin/insert/billboard indicating this drive was support for Obama, then there would be a violation, as the source of the candidate-specific support message would be clearly inferred to be the parish.

Blessings and regards,

Sorry, momentary "senior moment", that should be addressed to Cliff.

My apologies.
