Attempts to change the church to "make it more relevant in today's society" will only doom it to failure. Some classic examples from the Roman Catholic, Episcopal (tm), and other 'mainline" churches:
The church is timeless. It has always been relevant, and always will be. It is society, not the church, that needs to change.

Every generation someone will try to re-write and improve the 1928 Book of Common Prayer. They will fail miserably.
While I agree that many of these are more than foolish (put some clothes on in church!), I can't help but wonder if the early church was "doing it wrong" when they were participating in "whenever you do this, do it in remembrance of me". Yes we should have good judgment, but also try hard not to judge.
You know, I've always admired that line in Atlas Shrugged where Dagny says her view is "Judge...and prepare to be judged". That's a stern and stand up viewpoint.
B-b-b-b-but what happened to the Giant Papier-Mache' Puppets of Doom? Why were they excluded?? The Whale thing doesn't even come close!!
